21st Century Meeting Notes
February 27th, 2009
Poornima introduced the 21st Century Guiding Team to the wiki space on the Hawthorne website. We watched a short video to help us better understand what a wiki is and how it works. We discussed how we could use the wiki to have Hawthorne staff discussions in the future. A suggestion was made to post our thoughts on how we used 21st Century Skills with our Dr. Seuss lessons this week and how we thought our lessons went.

Kristin Skolgstad discussed how we can use higher order thinking skills for our ELL students. She will be doing an activity with staff at our meeting today. The activity is about Goldilocks and how to use higher level questioning. The guiding team also discussed how we can use the wiki to share ideas on integrating 21st Century Skills into our lessons. There are 2 posts by Cheryl that staff can log on and add to the discussion. Poornima will be sharing with staff at the meeting how to create an account and add to discussion questions or start discussion questions of their own. The posts that Cheryl has written are an introduction of staff and a Read Across America discussion.

We also looked through the Ruby Payne Learning Structures book and started brainstorming how the activities from Ruby Payne relate to 21st Century Skills. We are working on creating a Ruby Payne link where you can get more information.

Today the guiding team reviewed the 21st Century Skills Wiki and discussed what updates we could make. We are working on adding hyperlinks to each of the skills where teachers can find "I Can" statements and examples of work the students can do to be using 21st Century Skills. We are going to be adding a graphic of the 21st Century wheel to the Hawthorne wiki page. We also talked about how the discussions on Dr. Seuss / 21st century skills lessons and staff introductions are going.
